Burbank Declares Tim Burton Day with the Burbank International Film Festival

It’s time to brush up on Tim Burton classics and honor the man behind the popular generational emergence of goth horror and alluring fantasy. The Burbank City Council has declared that Sunday, September 24, 2023, will be “Tim Burton Day”. The day will recognize the famous filmmaker and all his noteworthy (and bingeworthy) accomplishments. Born and raised in Burbank, CA, Tim Burton is best known for his movies Batman, Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice. His unique vision has influenced the film industry and inspired many movie marathon nights full of creative plotlines, inventive characters and eerie nostalgia.

On September 24, 2023, Tim Burton will attend the awards gala of this year’s Burbank International Film Festival (BIFF) to accept his award and recognize this honor. As a Burbank native and industry legend, Burton has been a longtime advocate of the film festival. Last year, BIFF announced the advent of the “Tim Burton Native Burbank Visionary Award” which is given to a local Burbank Filmmaker who captures the imagination of an audience just as Tim Burton has done with his iconic movies.

His influence in the entertainment industry has soared in the last several decades with many of his films becoming cult classics – hailing him as an icon and fantasy-film genius. Ultimately, giving him the notoriety, respect, and admiration to have a whole day devoted to his imaginative vision and industry-leading accomplishments.

About Tim Burton

Timothy Walter Burton (born August 25, 1958 in Burbank, CA) is an American filmmaker, animator, and artist. His interest in animation and storytelling started at an early age when he became captivated by Roger Corman’s horror films while also developing a fondness for drawing – sparking a deep fascination and love for storytelling, horror, romance and fantasy. His passion led him to refine his craft at the American Institute of Arts, where he majored in animation. Upon graduation in 1980, he accepted a position working as an apprentice animator for Walt Disney Studios. Yet, after just a year, he sought the unknown and began his legendary journey that would change the American film industry forever.

Known for pioneering goth culture, Burton is revered for his fantasy, horror, and romantic films. These include Beetlejuice (1988), Edward Scissorhands (1990), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Corpse Bride (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), and Dark Shadows (2012), as well as the television series Wednesday (2022). Burton also directed the superhero films Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), the sci-fi film Planet of the Apes (2001), the fantasy-drama Big Fish (2003), the musical adventure film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), and the fantasy films Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016).

Come out to celebrate the man of the hour (or rather, the last several decades!) and support the American film industry during one of the most anticipated events of the year.
